Himachal's Largest, India's Least Populous
The district was formed by merging the formerly separate regions of Lahaul and Spiti, with its administrative headquarters at Keylong. Kunzum Pass (4,551 m) serves as the gateway to Spiti Valley from the Lahaul side, while Sumdo connects it with Kinnaur.
Spiti Valley is a cold desert characterized by barren landscapes, rugged terrain, and an average elevation of about 4,270 metres. The Spiti River flows through a deep gorge before joining the Sutlej River. Lahaul, in contrast, comprises three main valleys—Chandra Valley (Rangloi), Bhaga Valley (Ghar), and Chandra Bhaga Valley (Pattan/Chenab).
With improved connectivity through the Atal Tunnel, the district is emerging as a prominent tourist destination, attracting visitors for adventure tourism and scenic beauty.

The economy of the district is primarily agro-pastoral. Cultivation of high-value crops such as peas, potatoes, and exotic vegetables forms the backbone of local livelihoods.

Tourism has emerged as a major economic driver, especially during the summer months, with activities such as trekking, camping, and monastery tourism gaining popularity. However, the region lacks a large-scale industrial base due to its harsh climate, difficult terrain, and limited infrastructure. The district also relies on external skilled labour for various developmental activities.
