Diverse Landscape
Historically known as Nagarkot, Kangra served as the ancient capital of the Trigarta kingdom founded by the Katoch dynasty. It has long been regarded as the gateway to the picturesque Kangra Valley. Kangra is the largest district in the state, with its headquarters at Dharamshala, a prominent town known for its multicultural environment and as the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Dharamshala also hosts one of the most scenic cricket stadiums in the world, where international and Indian Premier League matches are held.

The economy of District Kangra is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture and allied activities forming the backbone of livelihoods. Tea cultivation plays a significant role, with “Kangra Tea” being internationally renowned for its distinct aroma, colour, and flavour. It is primarily cultivated in regions such as Palampur and Baijnath.

Tourism is another major contributor to the district’s economy, with numerous natural, cultural, and religious attractions drawing visitors throughout the year. Known as part of Dev Bhoomi, Kangra is home to several revered temples that attract lakhs of devotees annually.
